Yield and quality losses resulting from stem and root lodging of cereals can be severe. In severe lodging years, that occur every 3-4 years in the UK, 10-15% of the cereal area will suffer, with losses in those patches estimated at 25%. A lodged crop takes longer to dry and longer to combine, not to mention the impact on milling wheat premiums.

Knowledge of the infield risk is a challenge which needs to be managed. Although growers are exhorted these days to cut back on all inputs, it is all too easy to fall into the trap of saving £1 in the office only to lose £2 in the field! A quick calculation from growers own track record should show that outlay on plant growth regulators can easily be repaid many times over. Lodging is a threat to profit.
