May 2009 New-look McCormick MTX has style and substance - New-design bodywork is practical as well as stylishly modern
- Four-post cabin lets light flood in, gives improved all-round visibility
- More interior storage space makes life easier and more convenient
The most popular six-cylinder model in the McCormick range – the MTX – has been given a thorough make-over that gives the tractor a more modern, stylish appearance without detracting from its down-to-earth performance. All three models in the 117-133hp MTX ‘T3’ range get the upgrades, which include a four-post cabin design that does away with the ‘B’ post to let the light flood in, improve all-round visibility and provide a larger doorway. The MTX also adopts the stylish bodywork of the higher-specification XTX and TTX tractors, which has the practical advantage of a high-lifting one-piece engine hood making it easier to reach the engine and cooling pack. “These changes bring our popular six-cylinder workhorse tractor bang up to date with practical and driver comfort improvements that match our more sophisticated models,” says product specialist Paul Wade. “Inside the cabin there is new switchgear and a different interior layout, plus the convenience of a lidded compartment on top of the left-hand mudguard providing storage for the essential bits and pieces needed for a day’s work and a flat and level surface for writing up field and other records.” The latest MTX also has quicker and easier access to the engine and cooling pack now that the bonnet and side panels are replaced by a one-piece hood that lifts high on gas struts. The hood also carries more powerful headlights that, together with the larger number of stronger work lamps, give the MTX driver a better view of the tractor’s surroundings at night. Mechanically, specifications are unchanged from the previous model’s down-to-earth specification, which includes a 16x12 speed power shuttle transmission. The four powershift speeds in each range are operated by a range lever and thumb pulse switch or by the optional Autospeed controller if full electronic operation is preferred. A creep gearbox option provides additional ratios including extra-slow speeds for specialist seeding and other implements.
